The bag from the basement swap
In his story, Otto keeps a nameless storeroom in the basement of his building: wooden shelves, second-hand glass jars, seeds that survive extreme cold. People in the neighbourhood leave something and take something, no charter, no mission, just things passing from hand to hand. A canvas bag suits him exactly for that reason: it's the object of someone who carries things back and forth without making a fuss about it. In the portrait you only see his friendly face; the rest travels inside, unseen.
