Real sustainability.
My work is born from nature. It makes sense, then, that the way it is produced and shipped tries to do as little harm as possible. Here you can read what we actually do, with which suppliers and why, what depends on the product type, and what you can do. No claims we cannot back up with data.
Print on demand.
Almost every product in the store is made when the order comes in. There is no stock sitting in a warehouse waiting for someone to buy. That cuts overproduction, clearance waste and unnecessary storage.
It also means there is a production lead time before shipping. And that, depending on the product, the production facility may vary. What does not vary is that nothing is made until you order it.
Fine-art editions with WhiteWall.
Animal Kinhood Editions (Black Edition and XL Edition) are produced exclusively with WhiteWall, based in Frechen, Germany. It is one of the few fine-art labs certified to ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 50001 (energy management), both audited annually by independent third parties.
According to WhiteWall's own statement, their facilities run on green electricity. 41% of shipments in 2024 were handled via DHL GoGreen, which offsets transport emissions through certified projects.
- Custom on-demand packaging cut for each order, no wasted space
- Protective corners made from 100% recycled plastic
- WhiteWall is part of the CEWE Group and subject to CSRD sustainability reporting
A note on FSC: WhiteWall offers FSC®-certified paper and wood across its general catalogue. The exact scope for the Hahnemühle papers and frames used in AKH editions is still to be confirmed per batch. We do not claim FSC certification for these editions until we have that confirmation.
Materials and permanence.
The materials used in AKH editions are archival materials. This is not marketing language: it is the criterion by which they were chosen.
- Black Edition · Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth 305 g/m² · 100% cotton · acid-free · lignin-free · no optical brighteners · ISO 9706 · estimated permanence 85 years on display / over 200 years in dark storage
- XL Edition · Fuji Crystal Archive DP II + Diasec (2 mm matte acrylic + 3 mm Dibond) + solid-wood ArtBox (natural oak, black oak or white maple) · Fuji estimated permanence 75+ years
- Hamburg frame (framed Black Edition) · 20 mm black oak with bevelled black mat and anti-reflective glass
A piece that does not degrade for decades does not need replacing. That counts too.
Other products with our partner workshop.
Store products outside the editions catalogue (textiles, accessories, objects) are made on demand through a European partner workshop. By that supplier's policy, we do not publish their name, but I can tell you what I know and what I don't.
- Made on demand · no prior stock
- EU-destined orders are produced and shipped from European facilities
- Direct-to-garment printing with water-based inks
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification available on a selection of fabrics (the product page indicates it; not all lines are covered)
- Shipping mailers made of ≥70% post-consumer recycled plastic, per supplier data
What I do not know: the total transport footprint of those products, nor the energy breakdown of each facility. If that data is published and verified, I add it here.
The most sustainable thing is for it to last.
A product that lasts ten years avoids nine replacements. That weighs more than almost any other production decision.
That is why the store prioritises materials that age well: high-grammage paper made for the wall, garments with integral all-over printing that does not flake off, objects with real use. No filler "merch".
If you want the technical detail (weights, sizes, finish specs), it lives at Materials and quality.
Microfibres and textile care.
Some products contain synthetic fibres. Washing them can release microfibres into the water. There is no perfect fix, but there are ways to reduce it:
- Wash cold on gentle cycles
- Avoid unnecessary washes
- Use a microfibre filter bag when you can
- Air dry
What we say and what we don''t.
There are claims we do not make. I list them here because they show up often in similar stores and I want it to be clear:
- We do not claim "carbon-neutral shipping" or "carbon-neutral production"
- We do not use WhiteWall's German origin as an environmental argument (origin is not an LCA)
- We do not promise fixed donations per sale to conservation projects · no active programme exists · if one ever does, it will be communicated with detail and real figures
- We have not published a verified carbon footprint for the editions · that requires a full LCA · we do not have one yet
- We do not create in-house labels like "Animal Kinhood Eco-Certified" · if something is certified, I cite the external body
The WhiteWall figures (ISO, DHL GoGreen, green electricity) are published by them and auditable. Any claim on this page I cannot back up with a concrete source does not appear.
What you can do.
- Pick the right size before ordering · measure a piece you own · fewer returns = fewer shipments
- If you are buying several things, group them in one order when it makes sense
- Take care of what you buy so it lasts · by far the most effective part
