Women's t-shirt

Ambystoma mexicanum
Working the chinampa means caring for the water where the last axolotl lives.
Endemic exclusively to the canals and chinampas of the Xochimilco lake system, in Mexico City, at 2,240 metres of altitude. It inhabits the muddy beds of cold fresh water (between 6 and 20 °C), among aquatic vegetation such as ahuejote and water lily, in low-current zones. Its historic habitat also included the now-extinct lakes of Chalco and Texcoco.
The image is just the axolotl facing forward: pale pink skin, red feathery gills on either side of his head like a crown, and a wide mouth with that upward curve that looks like a calm smile. He wears the red plaid shirt and the well-worn blue denim jacket. I created him looking straight ahead, against a plain background: on a t-shirt it reads at a glance, and the pink of his skin stands out against any color of fabric.
After finding him watching, his grandmother told him the story of Xolotl: the one who turned into a water creature to avoid being sacrificed and stayed in the canal forever. Ikal repeats it exactly as it was told to him, without explaining it; he says maybe the axolotls didn't choose to stay, they just didn't fit anywhere else. Wearing his face means carrying that idea with you, unexplained. The rest lives in his story.
