Youth t-shirt

Ambystoma mexicanum
Working the chinampa means caring for the water where the last axolotl lives.
Endemic exclusively to the canals and chinampas of the Xochimilco lake system, in Mexico City, at 2,240 metres of altitude. It inhabits the muddy beds of cold fresh water (between 6 and 20 °C), among aquatic vegetation such as ahuejote and water lily, in low-current zones. Its historic habitat also included the now-extinct lakes of Chalco and Texcoco.
On the t-shirt goes his portrait: an axolotl with pale pink skin, red feathery gills open like a crown, and a wide mouth curved upward. He wears the red plaid shirt over the worn blue denim jacket. I created him facing forward against a plain background: the drawing reads clean across the chest, and the reds of the gills and the plaid provide the only warm color against the blue of the denim.
Ikal is never in a hurry and he doesn't leave, and for him that's a way of standing his ground. He looks after a canal that takes years to respond, and still he comes back every morning. It's a good idea to wear at fifteen, twenty, or forty: doing things at your own pace without giving up on them.
