Ambystoma mexicanum

Working the chinampa means caring for the water where the last axolotl lives.

Endemic exclusively to the canals and chinampas of the Xochimilco lake system, in Mexico City, at 2,240 meters of altitude. It inhabits the muddy beds of cold fresh water (between 6 and 20 °C), among aquatic vegetation such as ahuejote and water lily, in low-current zones. Its historic habitat also included the now-extinct lakes of Chalco and Texcoco.

An axolotl for the first coffee

On the mug goes Ikal's portrait: an axolotl with pale pink skin, red feathery gills on either side of his head like a crown, and a wide mouth curved upward. I created him facing forward against a plain background, with the red plaid shirt over the blue denim jacket. The inside of the mug is blue: the red of the gills and the shirt leans on that blue every time you lift it.

A chinampero's morning

Ikal starts around six, with the first mug and the stove lit, before there's light over San Gregorio Atlapulco. He learned the trade through mistakes: once he left a canal open all night and lost the whole harvest; the next day he replanted, and ever since he checks the water level twice before he leaves. This mug is for that quiet moment before all of that starts. I make it myself, Yago Partal, and you can read the whole story of who Ikal is in his biography.

  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Animal Kinhood is a series of anthropomorphic animal portraits created by Yago Partal. Each portrait features a real species dressed in clothing that reflects its personality, blending photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence.
