Nayna.

Youth t-shirt

The Nayna youth t-shirt carries her portrait printed across the entire surface: sleeves, front, back. It's not a print centered on the chest. It's a full print that covers the whole garment with the image of a cheetah wearing a black leather biker jacket, a red polka-dot bandana at the neck, and a crown of fresh red flowers on her head. Direct eyes, no calculated charm. A Nairobi motorcycle mechanic who knows exactly what she's looking at.

The engine tells the truth before the owner does. I listen to the machine first, then to the excuses.

Open savannas, grasslands and semi-arid scrub of eastern and southern sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana); also the central plateau of Iran, where the last Asiatic population survives with fewer than 50 individuals.

Eight thousand shillings

Eight thousand Kenyan shillings. That's what Nayna paid for a 2008 Honda CB125 that was more dead than alive. Bent frame, blown engine, tank pitted with corrosion. It was sold to her by a boda-boda rider called Ochieng — a motorcycle taxi driver — who didn't know what to do with it anymore. Eight thousand shillings was everything Nayna had at that moment. She was twenty. She'd been repairing bikes on the sidewalk for months, without a workshop, without a space, with four wrenches and a screwdriver. The boda-boda drivers in the area paid her in cash, sometimes in kind: a helmet, half a tank of gas, a plate of food.

She didn't always eat every day. But every night she wrote down what she'd earned in a squared notebook.

The CB125 was a bet she had no right to make. But Nayna doesn't think in terms of right. She thinks in terms of: can this be fixed or not. And that bike could be fixed.

On the street

That story — the bike, the sidewalk, the flashlight — isn't an ornament. It's the core of what you see in the portrait. Nayna looks like someone who has had to solve problems without help, without a safety net, without anyone telling her whether she was doing it right. Who learned by watching, worked with her hands, and built her own workshop by not giving up and keeping her accounts in a notebook.

Now she's twenty-five and has a workshop on Lunga Lunga Road, South B's industrial zone, Nairobi. It's called NAYNA MOTORS. She fixes eight to twelve bikes a week, mostly boda-boda that break the way anything breaks when it works fourteen hours a day. And every two or three months something better comes along: an old bike to restore, a crash bike she buys at auction. Those projects she works on at the end of the day, when the light is still coming through the door but the customers have left.

In the back of the workshop she has a 1985 Yamaha SR400 she bought at auction. Blown engine, incredible chrome underneath the grime. It's been dismantled for eight months, every part cleaned and photographed. She's in no hurry. It's not for sale. It's the first bike she's restoring just for herself.

§ 07What people ask.08 · about POD
  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Check the size guide in each product tab. Measure a t-shirt that fits you well and compare with the length and width measurements. The t-shirts have a regular fit, neither slim nor oversized.
  • On-demand production eliminates surplus stock and overproduction. Each product is manufactured only when someone orders it, drastically reducing material waste and the footprint of unsold inventory.
  • Yago Partal is a visual artist and photographer from Barcelona known for Zoo Portraits (2013), a project that brought his work to international media. Animal Kinhood is the evolution of that artistic exploration.
  • Yes. You will receive an email with a tracking number when your order ships from production. If your order ships in multiple packages, you will get a separate tracking number for each one.
  • Men's t-shirts range from XS to 5XL. Women's, kids', and youth sizes have specific ranges. Check the size guide on each product page for exact measurements in cm and inches.
