Nayna's engine

The Nayna mug is a ceramic mug with the portrait of Nayna, the cheetah, printed on the outside and a colored interior. Eleven ounces. For coffee, for tea, for cardamom chai if you want to do it the way they do it in South B, Nairobi, where Nayna has a motorcycle workshop on Lunga Lunga Road.

There's a sound Nayna makes when something goes right. Not voluntary. She can't control it. A low hum that rises from her chest — almost a purr — that appears when an engine starts clean after a difficult repair. Also when a gasket fits on the first try without forcing. Or when the mid-morning light comes through the workshop door on some random Tuesday and there's no emergency waiting outside.

Mwangi, the apprentice who has been at the workshop for eight months, calls it "Nayna's engine." Nineteen years old, quiet, observant. He hasn't told her. Or he has and she didn't react. With Nayna you're never quite sure how much she knows about what's going on around her. The answer, almost always, is: quite a bit more than you'd think.

Eleven ounces

The portrait on the mug shows Nayna face-on: the black leather biker jacket she bought at Gikomba with the money from her second rebuilt motorcycle, the red polka-dot bandana that belonged to her grandmother Wanjiku, the crown of fresh red flowers she puts on every morning after stopping at Wakulima market. Light blue background. Eleven ounces. A long coffee, a milky tea, or the chai that mama Amina serves her every morning at six forty-five without asking anything.

The mug does what mugs do: hold something hot at home, at your desk, in the kitchen first thing. The portrait is there — the flowers over the leather jacket — and if someone sees it and asks, you can tell them she's a cheetah who fixes motorcycles in Nairobi. Or you can say nothing. That works too.

If you want to know why she wears flowers on her head and grease on her hands, or what happened with the Honda CB125 she rebuilt at night on the sidewalk with a flashlight clamped between her teeth, [Nayna's biography](https://www.yagopartal.com/animal-kinhood/nayna/) tells the whole story. • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Yes. The mug is dishwasher and microwave safe. It is lead-free and BPA-free ceramic. To keep the print looking perfect as long as possible, avoid washing with highly abrasive products.
  • Yago Partal is a visual artist and photographer from Barcelona known for Zoo Portraits (2013), a project that brought his work to international media. Animal Kinhood is the evolution of that artistic exploration.
  • No. No animals participate in or are harmed during the process. The portraits are created combining photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence. They are fictional characters representing real species with respect and dignity.
  • AI generates intermediate fragments of the creative process — references, poses and, for wild species, part of the animal's visual base — never the final piece. Yago directs each portrait: researching the species, designing the character, and building the result by hand in Photoshop, layer by layer. The artistic decision is always human.
  • Open editions (main shop) are on-demand products with no copy limit. Limited editions (the Editions section of the shop) have controlled numbering and premium finishes with gallery-grade materials.
