Bruno met [Alek](https://www.yagopartal.com/animal-kinhood/alek/) at a music festival in Bilbao. It was the middle of the night. Bruno was recording the harbor with a portable recorder and Alek was on watch at a dock. Alek asked him what he was recording. "The water against the hull of your boat." They talked until five in the morning.

Since then they send each other voice messages every two or three weeks. Alek lives in Reykjavík — three thousand four hundred kilometers northwest of Marseille. Alek sends audio from the Icelandic harbor: cranes, wind, seagulls. Bruno sends back snippets of concerts or the mistral against the antennas of the Old Port. Sometimes Bruno takes days to reply, and Alek wonders if he cares. He does. It's just that replying takes social energy he doesn't always have.

They haven't seen each other since Bilbao.

What makes this relationship particular is the medium. Other friends send text messages or call. Bruno and Alek send sounds. Alek learned to record with his phone because Bruno doesn't read long texts well (they tire him out, he says, though it's probably that he doesn't feel like writing back) and because an audio of Reykjavík harbor at three in the morning says more than any paragraph. Bruno, for his part, records snippets of his life in Marseille and sends them without explanation: the sound of a greengrocer shouting prices in Noailles, a double bass tuning before a sound check, the mistral whistling through the Old Port masts.

It's a language that only works between two people who understand that listening is a form of attention. Alek, Atlantic puffin and electrician at a port in the North Atlantic, understands Bruno's silences better than the people who live on his street.
