An archivist at the mairie, about to retire, gave Wesley a goat-hair brush. "To clean without breaking," he told him, and didn't add anything else. It's the only thing anyone at that place ever gave him without his having to earn it, and he brings it to the office every day. He uses it to dust off documents before opening them, and some Saturdays, without anyone asking, he restores old maps and records with it. I created him looking straight ahead, with nothing around him to distract.

For Wesley, a well-preserved map is the memory of who had access to which water and which right of way for generations; taking care of it is his way of making sure the people who are no longer here still count. That way of treating old things with care is what the t-shirt carries, even though the brush doesn't show: just his calm, forward-facing face.
