You don't need NASA to look up. You need a dark night and to know where to look.
Open savanna and wooded savanna of the Sahel and East Africa: from Niger and Chad to Ethiopia, Uganda and South Sudan. The West African subspecies lives exclusively in the Kouré area (Niger), in savanna with acacias, combretum and balanites, at altitudes of 0 to 2,000 m.
A lot of people think you need really expensive equipment, or a job at NASA, to look at the stars. Ayana thinks the opposite, which is why she tells the kids: you don't need NASA to look up; you need a dark night and to know where to look. The sky belongs to everyone, and it costs nothing. You just have to tilt your head back, be patient, and learn the names of what you see up there.
And she has good reason to say it: when she was young she had no money for a telescope, so she built one herself with two lenses from an old pair of glasses and a length of pipe like the ones used for water. With that plumbing contraption she saw the Moon full of craters and the rings of Saturn. Every night the sky is clear, she writes down in her notebook what she saw.
