Backpack

Past kilometer two hundred on the Trans-Gabon, a landslide cut the line one rainy night, and Ndong's train sat stopped in the forest until dawn. This mandrill backpack carries his portrait, that of an adult mandrill with a blue-and-red mask, an orange hat, and an ocher jacket over a teal background, from my Animal Kinhood series.

Tropical lowland rainforest across west-central Africa: southern Cameroon, mainland Equatorial Guinea, Gabon — home by far to the largest population — and the southwest of the Republic of the Congo. It favors primary forest and dense ginger thickets, and also turns up in forest-savanna mosaics like those of Lopé.

Kilometer Two Hundred, at Night

In his story there's one night unlike any other shift. Past kilometer two hundred, a landslide from the rainy season left the local stopped in the middle of the forest, nothing around but trees. Two hundred-odd people climbed down onto the ballast, and within half an hour three fires were already burning. Ndong stood at the edge of the embankment all night, barely moving or speaking. He didn't need to say anything. When they cleared the line at dawn and people climbed back on, he was the last to do it.

Six Hundred People and Just Enough for the Road

Ndong's family doesn't live in a house: they live in a forest community of more than six hundred people, and he knows almost every name even if he doesn't recognize every face. When he goes up in the dry season he doesn't need to carry much, because everything's already there: a place to sleep, food shared out, people who've been waiting for him for months. And whatever he does carry — on the train, in the forest, wherever — he makes sure it's little and that it lasts. In that community of more than six hundred people, nobody carries more than they can bear on foot.

§ 07What people ask.08 · about POD
  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Animal Kinhood is a series of anthropomorphic animal portraits created by Yago Partal. Each portrait features a real species dressed in clothing that reflects its personality, blending photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence.
  • Yes. At checkout you can enter a different shipping address from billing. The package arrives white-label with no visible price, so the recipient will not see the cost.
  • Since products are made on demand, different items may be manufactured at different facilities. Posters, mugs, and backpacks are often shipped separately. Each package has its own tracking number.
  • Yago Partal is a visual artist and photographer from Barcelona known for Zoo Portraits (2013), a project that brought his work to international media. Animal Kinhood is the evolution of that artistic exploration.
  • No. No animals participate in or are harmed during the process. The portraits are created combining photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence. They are fictional characters representing real species with respect and dignity.
