What you carry on your back when you change places: this kakapo backpack carries the portrait of Kiri, a character from my Animal Kinhood series, where animals dress and live like people. Kiri is an adult kakapo from an island in southern New Zealand, and I created her with a calm, direct face, no smile.

Temperate rainforest in New Zealand. Today it survives only on predator-free sanctuary islands — Whenua Hou, Pukenui/Anchor and Hauturu — plus one fenced mainland enclosure.
At nine, she was put on a boat with twelve other people and set down on another island. Nobody explained why, because the explanation was demographic and she was nine years old. From that day she remembers two things: the smell of the engine, and that her mother never let go of the box during the whole crossing. She doesn't say she cried or asked questions. She reports the engine and the box, and considers the matter explained.
In her people, nobody moves because they feel like it. Changing islands is a decision about who's needed where, and nobody is asked much about it. The real kakapo travels the same way: there are so few left that every transfer between sanctuary islands is planned one by one and made by boat. Kiri has seen it happen again several times since then, always from the side of the one who stays on the island.
