A Cardboard Box in August
Alek grew up in Heimaey, the island where in August baby puffins leave their burrow for the first time and the village lights confuse them. Kids go out at night to collect them in cardboard boxes, weigh them, and return them to the sea from the cliff at dawn. He did it every August from age eight on, never celebrating a single rescue, never skipping a night. It never seemed like a feat to him; it was just what you did, like setting the table. The t-shirt carries that quiet face of someone who cares without talking about it.
