Backpack

Printed on this hippopotamus backpack is the portrait of Limbani, who makes bricks by hand on a riverbank in Malawi and gets paid per thousand. It is from Animal Kinhood, my series of animals with a trade, and I sign it as Yago Partal.

Hippopotamus amphibius

Don't come looking for me at two in the afternoon, I'll be in the water.

Rivers, lakes and freshwater marshes across sub-Saharan Africa, always with enough depth to submerge completely and with grazing close to the bank. In Malawi its main strongholds are the river Shire where it runs through Liwonde National Park, where more than two thousand individuals are concentrated, and the shallow shores of Lake Malawi.

He Counted Them Three Times

He was eleven when he counted a thousand bricks laid by him and got paid for a whole thousand for the first time. He counted them three times because he didn't believe the number. By the time they came to collect them he had fallen asleep in the grass, next to the line. His work is still measured the same way: per thousand bricks, piece rate, no contract and nothing signed. The bricks are counted on the ground, on the same drying line where they dried in the sun.

The Kiln Is Built Out of the Green Bricks

Before that there is a chain of steps that never changes. He digs the clay at night, throws it into the pit and puddles the clay with his bare feet until it comes out fine; he tips it into the wooden mould and leaves it on the line, in the sun, to firm up. When there are enough, he builds the kiln out of those same green bricks: walls, vault and stoke hole, all of it unfired mud. The firewood goes inside and the thing burns for days on end. When it cools, the kiln is taken apart, and what gets taken apart is what gets sold.

  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Animal Kinhood is a series of anthropomorphic animal portraits created by Yago Partal. Each portrait features a real species dressed in clothing that reflects its personality, blending photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence.
