In her story, that flower-shaped pearl brooch belonged to her grandmother Marama, who wore it pinned on even to sleep and said it was so she wouldn't lose it. Nobody ever promised Kiri it would be hers. It turned up on top of her things the morning of the funeral, with no letter and no conversation beforehand, and she pinned it on that same day to go out to work. She hasn't left the house without it since. It's the only piece of jewelry she owns, and in the print it sits small, on the left side, against the wool of the jacket.

Whenua Hou sits off the coast of Rakiura and is small enough to cross on foot in an afternoon. Which is how Kiri crosses it, because a kakapo has no other way: it's the heaviest parrot in the world, up to four kilos, and the only one that has completely lost the ability to fly. It walks the forest floor at night, climbs trees for fruit, and comes down folding its wings like a parachute. It weighs about as much as a large cat.
