Matte poster

This hippopotamus poster is an unframed print from my Animal Kinhood series, where the animals dress and live like people. The one in the portrait is called Limbani: a broad head, small eyes set very high, round ears and a purple bucket hat with a cream-coloured crown. Underneath, a purple hooded sweatshirt with a zip, a white collared shirt and a heavy gold-link chain.

Hippopotamus amphibius

Don't come looking for me at two in the afternoon, I'll be in the water.

Rivers, lakes and freshwater marshes across sub-Saharan Africa, always with enough depth to submerge completely and with grazing close to the bank. In Malawi its main strongholds are the river Shire where it runs through Liwonde National Park, where more than two thousand individuals are concentrated, and the shallow shores of Lake Malawi.

A Metre and a Half of Ground

That stake has been in the same spot for years, and now there is a metre and a half of ground left in front of it. After that the air, and after that the river. Limbani goes down that path every night with his basket and walks past it without stopping. Anyone who points it out to him gets the same answer every time: that he will move it. None of this shows in the print. What you get is a broad, heavy head, small eyes with pink lids and a purple hat with a brim already fraying.

The Afternoon He Didn't Work

He drove it in at twenty-three, on a Sunday, with the mallet for breaking clods. Back then there was ground to spare in front of it and the mark did what marks do: it reminded him how far in he could dig. That afternoon he didn't work. Since that Sunday the bank has been eating the distance and the stake is still exactly where he left it. One note for whoever hangs this on a wall: the hippopotamus is the closest living relative of whales and dolphins, and shares an ancestor with them from some 55 million years ago.

§ 07What people ask.08 · about POD
  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Animal Kinhood is a series of anthropomorphic animal portraits created by Yago Partal. Each portrait features a real species dressed in clothing that reflects its personality, blending photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence.
  • Open editions (main shop) are on-demand products with no copy limit. Limited editions (the Editions section of the shop) have controlled numbering and premium finishes with gallery-grade materials.
  • Yes, we ship worldwide. Shipping costs vary by region and product type. You can see the exact cost at checkout before confirming your order.
  • Since products are made on demand, different items may be manufactured at different facilities. Posters, mugs, and backpacks are often shipped separately. Each package has its own tracking number.
  • The posters use 189 g/m2 matte paper sourced from Japan, 0.26 mm thick. They are printed with water-based multicolour inkjet, ensuring accurate colours and a smooth, glare-free finish.
