Dotwork teaches you to wait. Dot by dot, without pressing the skin.

"Ants with helmets"

Koko Mapula lived next door, in the part of Limpopo where the earth is red and flat. She sewed clothes for the neighbors. She had the steadiest hands her granddaughter had ever seen. And one night, when Nala was eight and couldn't sleep, Koko took her to the edge of the field with a flashlight.

Two eyes glowing under a bush. A long-haired crest that showed for a second and disappeared into a burrow.

"See? Looks big. But it's small. And it doesn't bite. It just eats ants."

What Koko taught

Koko taught things without saying what she was teaching. At six she sat her down to thread needles. At eight, Nala was sewing buttons on the shirts they then sold at the market. It wasn't play: it was small-hands work, and Nala's were the stillest in the village. That's where the hands come from that today tattoo dotwork — thousands of dots, one by one, without rush — in a Johannesburg neighborhood called Maboneng, which means "place of light" in Sesotho.

The connection between the seamstress grandmother and the tattooist granddaughter isn't coincidence. It's direct inheritance, passed hand to hand the way needles are passed. If you want to read the full story — how Nala got from Limpopo to Maboneng, what happened with Koko, why she wears that collar — it's in her [biography](https://www.yagopartal.com/animal-kinhood/nala/).

But you don't need to know all that for the t-shirt to work. A kid sees an animal in a studded jacket and a pink hoodie and thinks it's fine. Fun. Someone they'd want to meet. And if they ask — and kids always ask — you can tell them about the ants with helmets.

  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • The t-shirts are 96% cotton and 4% elastane, weighing 189 g/m2. The fabric is soft with a smooth surface, ideal for all-over printing. They are pilling-resistant and colourfast after washing.
  • Men's t-shirts range from XS to 5XL. Women's, kids', and youth sizes have specific ranges. Check the size guide on each product page for exact measurements in cm and inches.
  • No. No animals participate in or are harmed during the process. The portraits are created combining photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence. They are fictional characters representing real species with respect and dignity.
