The real species

Red panda.

Ailurus fulgens

I climb up high and watch in silence. I know my own by their tails, and I don't rest easy until I know not one of them is missing.

The original panda

Here's the first curious fact, the one worth lingering over: the red panda is the original panda. When it was given the name "panda" in 1825, the giant panda didn't have it yet; it would borrow the name half a century later. So, strictly speaking, the real panda is this one: small, reddish, with a long ringed tail. Its face may look familiar from somewhere else: it's the one that inspired the mascot of the Firefox browser. Dolma, of course, knows nothing of that; she's just a young red panda girl from the hills of Darjeeling.

Good hands for bamboo

The second curious fact is about deftness. The red panda grips bamboo thanks to a "false thumb": a little wrist bone, extended, that works like an extra thumb. That's why it handles thin stalks with a rare skill. Dolma comes by that skill naturally: she's one of those who tie, knot, and draw fine without thinking about it, even if in the portrait you only see her face. I created her head-on, with a plain background, and the mug is white with the inside and handle in red, matching her sweater. She's part of Yago Partal's Animal Kinhood series, and there's much more of her in her biography.
