Here's the first curious fact, the one worth lingering over: the red panda is the original panda. When it was given the name "panda" in 1825, the giant panda didn't have it yet; it would borrow the name half a century later. So, strictly speaking, the real panda is this one: small, reddish, with a long ringed tail. Its face may look familiar from somewhere else: it's the one that inspired the mascot of the Firefox browser. Dolma, of course, knows nothing of that; she's just a young red panda girl from the hills of Darjeeling.

The second curious fact is about deftness. The red panda grips bamboo thanks to a "false thumb": a little wrist bone, extended, that works like an extra thumb. That's why it handles thin stalks with a rare skill. Dolma comes by that skill naturally: she's one of those who tie, knot, and draw fine without thinking about it, even if in the portrait you only see her face. I created her head-on, with a plain background, and the mug is white with the inside and handle in red, matching her sweater.
