Tote bag

Hakon Bendiksen shores up, shims and relevels the houses of Longyearbyen, raised on piles driven into ground that freezes and thaws; this arctic tern tote bag carries his portrait, from Animal Kinhood, my series of animals with clothes and a trade.

The real species

Arctic tern.

Sterna paradisaea

In August the wood moves more.

Breeds on Arctic and subarctic coasts, islets and coastal tundra — Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, northern Scandinavia and Russia, the British Isles, the Canadian Arctic and Alaska — on shingle beaches and predator-free islets. Winters in the Southern Ocean, tied to the sea ice and to the most productive waters of the southern hemisphere.

The bucket by the door

Three thicknesses. The bucket sits by the door of his room, with the wooden shims sorted by thickness, and out of it comes whichever one is needed when a house starts to go over on one side. The plastic ones he keeps apart. He doesn't like them, and if you ask him why he can't answer: he stops for a second to think about it and starts talking about something else. The wooden ones he cuts himself.

The shim that was good for nothing

He cut the first one at fourteen, out of a piece of formwork board lying on the warehouse floor. The tip came out too thick and it was good for nothing, not then and not later. He has carried it ever since in the inside pocket of his jacket, where nobody sees it. He has changed jackets three times and the shim has moved from one to the next every time, without him making anything of it. The tip is still just as thick as the day he cut it.

§ 07What people ask.08 · about POD
  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Animal Kinhood is a series of anthropomorphic animal portraits created by Yago Partal. Each portrait features a real species dressed in clothing that reflects its personality, blending photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence.
  • Yes. We accept custom commissions of all kinds: pet portraits, corporate projects, and artistic collaborations. Visit the Custom Projects section in the footer for details and contact.
  • Yes. At checkout you can enter a different shipping address from billing. The package arrives white-label with no visible price, so the recipient will not see the cost.
  • If you notice a print defect (misaligned colours, stains, missing ink areas), contact us with photos at mail@yagopartal.com. Production defects are resolved with a replacement at no extra cost.
  • Open editions (main shop) are on-demand products with no copy limit. Limited editions (the Editions section of the shop) have controlled numbering and premium finishes with gallery-grade materials.
