Hakon.

Framed poster

An arctic tern framed poster, with Hakon Bendiksen inside: black cap, white cheeks, coral-red bill. He is number 36 of Animal Kinhood, my series of animals who dress and live like people, and he is a carpenter: he shims and relevels the houses of Longyearbyen, in Svalbard, raised on piles that the ground keeps moving.

The real species

Arctic tern.

Sterna paradisaea

In August the wood moves more.

Breeds on Arctic and subarctic coasts, islets and coastal tundra — Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, northern Scandinavia and Russia, the British Isles, the Canadian Arctic and Alaska — on shingle beaches and predator-free islets. Winters in the Southern Ocean, tied to the sea ice and to the most productive waters of the southern hemisphere.

Before he touches anything

He walks into the house, stands in the entryway and raps twice on the wall with his knuckles. Then he waits a second, listening, before he touches anything. He does it in houses he isn't going to fix too, and in his mother's he does it at the same spot, next to the back door frame. Nobody remarks on it anymore. If you ask him what he is listening for, he shrugs and moves on.

The one that kept going

There was one in the bottom row that kept going. He shimmed it twice — the second time lying down and opening it up from below — and in the next fall measurement the number had grown again. A pile had come off its axis and that was no longer a job for shims. They emptied the house. The measurements of that house are still in his notebook, with a line drawn under the last one. He doesn't open that page again: when he is looking for another, he flicks past it with his thumb without looking.

  • Each product is made to order when you place your purchase. There is no pre-made stock or overproduction. A specialised production partner prints, cuts, and prepares it specifically for you.
  • It depends on two things: which piece it is and where it goes. Posters, the mug, the tote and the backpack ship from Europe: 4-7 business days to Europe, 2-4 to the UK, 2-6 to the USA and Canada, 6-22 to the rest of the world. T-shirts and the sweatshirt are made in the United States, so they take considerably longer to reach Europe: 9-25 business days, 7-10 to the UK, 4-10 to the USA and Canada, 5-17 to the rest of the world. Every figure already includes making the piece, since each one is produced when you order it. You will see the exact date for your shipment at checkout.
  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Yes, we ship worldwide. Shipping costs vary by region and product type. You can see the exact cost at checkout before confirming your order.
  • Each portrait combines photography, digital illustration, and AI-generated fragments under Yago's artistic direction: AI supplies intermediate material — references, poses, textures — never the final output. The process includes species research, character design, and detailed manual construction — photomontage, light, color, and illustration — built layer by layer in Photoshop.
  • AI generates intermediate fragments of the creative process — references, poses and, for wild species, part of the animal's visual base — never the final piece. Yago directs each portrait: researching the species, designing the character, and building the result by hand in Photoshop, layer by layer. The artistic decision is always human.
  • Yes. You have 14 calendar days to withdraw, with no need to give a reason (TRLGDCU arts. 102-108). Return the product unused and in its original condition; return shipping is at your expense and any loss of value from handling beyond inspection is deducted (art. 108.2). Your statutory guarantee of conformity also remains fully in force: any product arriving damaged or with a defect is replaced or refunded at no cost. Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com.
  • Yes. At checkout you can enter a different shipping address from billing. The package arrives white-label with no visible price, so the recipient will not see the cost.
