Framed poster
To hang something on the wall with no extra fuss: this framed sand cat print arrives already mounted — take it out of the box and hang it up. Inside is Tiziri, a portrait from my Animal Kinhood series, where the animals dress and live like people. Sand-colored fur with faint stripes, white cheeks, pale green eyes, and huge ears set very low on her head. Underneath, gray-green and cream clothing, and the one flash of shine in the whole image: a very thin gold chain.

True sandy and stony deserts: dunes, plains and regs, from the western Sahara (Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria) to the Arabian Peninsula, Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan), Iran and Pakistan. It avoids steep rocky terrain and prefers loose substrates where it can dig or shelter in burrows. It withstands extreme temperature ranges, from -25°C in winter to ground temperatures of 50-58°C in summer.
A sand cat's feet are covered in dense, dark fur on the soles and between the toes. That lining insulates it from the ground, which in its desert goes from the cold of night to an oven-like heat. And along the way it blurs the tracks: you can tell it passed through, not exactly where. None of that fits in a bust portrait, which cuts off at the wide lapel of the gray-green wool coat.
Tiziri finds leaks by setting a geophone against the road and listening to what's running a meter below. The one she uses was left behind by an apprentice who requested a transfer, and she's never given it back — it's better than the unit's own. It still carries a scrap of tape with a name half worn away. She hasn't taken it off, hasn't covered it up, and doesn't look at it either.
