The Red You Can See From the Door

This print captures only what you can see: an emperor penguin chick facing forward, the black-and-white mask, the very large dark eyes, and all that red —coat, earmuffs, hat— as the single burst of warmth against the blue-grey. I created it that way on purpose, with nothing around it: on a wall, the red pulls the eye from across the room and you can tell who it is at a glance. It's a print from my Animal Kinhood series, with a named character and a story behind him, signed by me, Yago Partal.

A Child on the Last Shore

Birdie lives in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, the last port before the ice, where the cold justifies every layer of that coat. The print takes his portrait out of that story and brings it into your home: with no distracting glare, it works just as well in an entryway as on a shelf. And a detail that isn't in the image but explains the coat: emperor penguin chicks survive the winter by huddling together in a circle, packed tight, to keep from losing heat. That instinct to draw close against the cold is, deep down, what Birdie is all about. There's more of him in his biography.
