Olwen.

Some animals take weeks to get going, and then there are hares. Baby hares, called leverets, are born out in the open field with their fur on, eyes open and legs ready: within a few hours they're taking their first hops. The field at that hour still smells of wet grass, and they're already loose in it. That's why a hare fits so well on the clothes of a little one who's always out ahead, who learns before you've finished explaining, who arrives everywhere running. Olwen isn't hopping in the portrait, but that head start of the species is what whoever wears this t-shirt carries.

Olwen has a winter trade in a Welsh valley, and one lovely thing about her is that she keeps a pair of small gloves in her old Land Rover, just in case someone wants to learn the craft. She teaches slowly, closer to kneading bread than to giving a class: in no rush to finish. And who knows which little one, wearing this t-shirt, decides one day they also want to learn a get-your-hands-dirty trade.
