Bagus.

Matte poster

This elephant poster is a portrait of Bagus, an apothecary from my Animal Kinhood series, my gallery of animals who dress and live like people. An adult makhna, tuskless, wearing a mustard corduroy shirt and a gentleman's waistcoat, calm and facing forward against a plain background.

The real species

Asian elephant.

Elephas maximus

There's no such thing as a weed. Just an herb you haven't found the use for yet.

Tropical forests and grasslands of South and Southeast Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, and southern China); the Sumatran branch lives in the lowland forests and the slopes of the Bukit Barisan mountains.

A Tuskless Bull

The first thing you notice is what's missing: the tusks. Bagus is a makhna, one of those Asian elephants born without them, and that's why his face looks rounder, more shopkeeper than mountain animal. He wears the mustard corduroy shirt buttoned up and the brown gentleman's waistcoat over it, as if he'd just opened the stall. The background, a plain celadon green, lets the color of the corduroy and the calm of that gaze carry all the weight. On a wall, it reads at a glance.

The Apothecary of the High Market

In his story, Bagus runs a stall in the high market of Liwa, a mountain city in Sumatra so cool and full of flowers that they call it Kota Berbunga, the city of flowers. An elephant dispensing remedies? Here, yes: he makes jamu, the remedies of roots, bark and spices ground by hand, and diagnoses by smell, sniffing out the ailment before naming it. This poster doesn't tell all of that; it takes his face out of the story and puts it on a wall, with that mix of calm shopkeeper and old sage. If you take a liking to this elephant, there's more of him in his biography.

  • Contact us at mail@yagopartal.com with your order number and clear photos of the damage (include packaging). We will review your case and offer a solution as soon as possible, either replacement or refund.
  • Since products are made on demand, different items may be manufactured at different facilities. Posters, mugs, and backpacks are often shipped separately. Each package has its own tracking number.
  • Yes. You will receive an email with a tracking number when your order ships from production. If your order ships in multiple packages, you will get a separate tracking number for each one.
  • On-demand production eliminates surplus stock and overproduction. Each product is manufactured only when someone orders it, drastically reducing material waste and the footprint of unsold inventory.
  • Each portrait combines photography, illustration, and artificial intelligence under Yago's artistic direction. The process includes species research, character design, AI-assisted generation, and detailed manual editing.
  • AI is a tool within the creative process, not the process itself. Yago directs each portrait: researching the species, designing the character, and manually selecting and editing the result. The artistic decision is always human.
