Kiri is a midwife on Whenua Hou, an island off southern New Zealand, and tends the entire kakapo people: two hundred and thirty-four of them, and she knows the list by name. Births only come in the years the rimu masts; the rest of the time she goes out on her round every night just the same. Each one born changes the census of a whole species.
