Gavino opens his watchmaker's shop when the rest of Nuoro closes: he works at night, in low light, bow tie on even when he expects no one. He fixes watches by ear — he holds them to his ear and finds the fault before touching a screw. A watch isn't looked at, it's listened to. The elders who come by just to talk, he doesn't charge.
